African Communities Across The Globe Are Cancelling South Africa
Reneilwe Morema reports on The Puebla International Literature Festival in Mexico, an annual event dedicated to celebrating literature and promoting cultural exchange, withdrawing their invitations to South African Authors following Xenophobic attacks online aimed at Chidimma Adetshina (MISS SA Finalist). The Festival director, Ikenna Oke, says that the festival cannot honor a country as a focal point of their celebration when it is currently embroiled in profound injustices. Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton Mckenzie defended the Country’s actions by saying that ‘’Chidimma is not an exception to the law, all laws must be acknowledged and respected, it is a shame that innocent South African authors get denied by the festival because they expect us to allow a crime to be overlooked’’.
